The arts provide an excellent model for individual and collective dedication to excellence; the quest for perfection is perpetual. As artists we identify and stretch boundaries, and in that process, we at times bump into each other. Not all bumps could or should be categorized as conflict, but even conflict and chaos can contribute in positive ways to our work as artists.
In Poetics of Music, Stravinsky speaks of the need for boundaries - he states that only when our boundaries are most fixed are we truly free. The parallel with establishing professional goals is significant, that we do our best work when our ensemble, cast, or corps has shared understanding of and commitment to shared goals.
The primary pedagogical method for the arts is the apprenticeship tradition. Talent development models speak to an individually created design and learning plan based on the current level and aspirations of the individual or group. Continuous evaluation is another hallmark of the arts, the ability to assess, make necessary adjustments, and move forward. In the arts, and in our collaborations, we always have room for improvement and growth.
